The reluctant you “coachee”

In the initial years of me as a Coach, I once had a client, who was very reluctant to open up or even get coached, let’s call the person “J”, so J was referred by J’s partner and there was a lot of friction between the two, no wonder as a Coach I was caught up between two partners with a unique set of issues each.

J’s partner coaching went well but in the case of J, it was a bit of a challenge.

this was a coaching assignment, in which it took me a very long time to make any breakthrough, so one day, I decided to change my method and began my session with “J” sharing my crisis story, it was a session in which I spoke, and only I spoke and J just listened.

Toward the end of the session, J finally broke the silence and gave me access to that part of J’s life that was never shared with anyone.

I finally got my breakthrough.

Do you know what really changed that day?

What really made the change possible was my narration, when J listened to it, my crisis story deeply resonated with J, it reinforced that a coach can be as vulnerable, as weak, and as in need of help as any other individual.

There are three key lessons in this event, for anyone trying to seek the support of a coach but are hesitant.

1. No coach or a mental health expert is immune to problems or crisis of life , shit happens to everyone, and you are not alone!

2. By sharing our vulnerable side in our story, we let the person know there is no shame in being vulnerable or in failing in life!

3. Never feel ashamed to seek help, asking for help is a sign of courage and not weakness.

I would like to close by sharing my bio, and my personal crisis story

My intention is, you know me a bit more and perhaps this email may open up, for many of you, still hesitant to reach out or seek support.
