Blind Spots

It was at the reception of one of my maternal cousins when I met a distant relative who had become more obese than before and was wearing an eye shade in a weird golden-orange colour, smudged all over her eyelid, bright and loud.

The loudness of her make-up turned heads, and the poor soul thought she was looking fabulous; what she missed were the muffled giggles, or perhaps she knew it and consciously overlooked them because the make-up was doing what it was intended to do.

Then, from the crowd, a kind-hearted aunt mustered the courage, took her aside, and explained what was wrong.

I was also part of the gathering, but I didn’t choose to be that kind-hearted aunt because my relationship with her was too formal, and she was way too old for me to offer her any correction.

What I shared with you is a very simple example of a blind-spot behaviour from an ordinary moment in life, where much about us is better known to others than to ourselves, and is also often the reason we continue a pattern of behaviour that causes us more harm than we can anticipate.

After reading this story, if you are curious and wondering whether you may also have such blind spots, not necessarily to do with appearance but behaviours that might have been the real cause of a problem you have been struggling with for a long time, unknown to you?

In that case, do this.

Recall any past events in your life, be it from your workspace or in your relationship, where you had given your 200% and yet things turned out to be the opposite of what you had intended. You thought you knew it so well, but you were in for surprises not so pleasant, and you kept wondering what was amiss.

Write whatever you had recalled and then bring your focus to the minute, subtle details on what you intended and what actually happened. Amidst it lie your blind spots!

Let me add, it’s not easy work but worth trying.

This video is for you; it is designed and narrated by me, and it shares a slice of life, with real-life examples to make you understand what it might cost you if you continue to ignore your blind spots, just as it did for me.

Watch it here.

Blind spots are like the back side of our physical self, which we can’t see unless we use a mirror, and what we can’t see we can’t change. And not being able to change is what might keep you coming back to similar situations with similar results, with no change.

Journey of Self is a coaching program designed to be that mirror for you, helping you trust your own voice and be an unapologetic you, at ease in your skin. At the driver’s seat of your Life.
