Coping with Grief: Understanding the Brain’s Role & Building Resiliency

How it started

    My father’s demise, which coincided with my parent’s 42nd anniversary, which turned from a family get-together into a funeral; this coinciding of dates left a deep emotional void in my mother’s psyche; though she never fully shared what was going on in her mind, months later her body showed signs of distress in the form of Arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats) that she has recently developed and at present is undergoing treatment under the particular unit of cardiology called –Cardio electrophysiology which specializes in this stream.

Most of the time, she is curious to understand what exactly is wrong with her and grills me with questions; in return, I politely obliged and used this as an opportunity to counsel her on her grief.

Grateful

In all humility, I’ve been extremely grateful to God, for I have been quite successful in this particular method I’ve adapted and in helping her recover from her grief.

During one such Q&A session between me and my mother, which happened while we were waiting outside the doctor’s cabin.

During those five hours, I was able to;

  • Assist her with a method to forgive herself for all that she has been through, especially at her in-law’s place.
  • Understand the need to let it be; all those unresolved conflicts that she could not resolve as a spouse, WHICH now need to be put on a tombstone to signify their finality, just as my father’s existence.
  •  What happens in our mind when we Grieve “The working of Nucleus accumbens”, the part of the Brain holding grief.

Our conversation ended with some regular questions on AI, as she attempts to understand Artificial Intelligence and its workings as she cannot wrap her head around it.

The new Method

With my newfound success, I was inspired to extend this method of simplifying the complex working of the brain to a simple explanation, which in turn can help many manage their stress in a more effective manner, thereby building their resiliency muscle.

Here’s my first attempt
