Blaming it as office politics, while it is something else.

This blog post is a continuation of the previous blog post titled “Beware of Reality of Glamourous role titles” .

This one is answering the same question we discussed in the previous blog post but with my experience of it.

Read on…

The start to end

After having a series of promotions every year, I entered a phase of my professional life where I ended up being overconfident but far away from being self-aware, I would take things for granted and paid very little attention to change my approach, as a complacent leader, I believed continuing on with the same approach which got me to this level of success will also take me ahead.

I thought I have been acing it and have nailed it!

But my success was short lived due to the faulty approach towards my work, which resulted in committing the first blunder in my career, which in the future remained till date a critical factor in derailing my career.

What was that ?

The lack of support and investment in self-development when one reaches leadership levels.

I wish I was as fortunate as you are, as you read this and will next evaluate your present role with all its share of good and bad with this question.

The Golden Question

What do you want in this situation? What are your goals?

My chase ,confusions and Coaching

After a consecutive five straight years of promotions, accolades and rewards, I decided to try new avenues, and my search ended up applying to an internal job transfer in a completely new department of the company, a function, of which I had no experience and skills.

At that time, neither I was clear on what I was running away from, nor Where I was running towards and therefore, I was on a run, in my mind, in my present role, from my boss, to another one, and towards an unknown future role and department, like a wild goose chase I ran and ran till it exacerbate me.

Several years later, it was during the work with my coach, when I answered this key question, a lot of realization dawn upon me, but by the time it happened, I had already left the battlefield, (read Corporate job), I was now a lot wiser but exhausted.

So,

If you find yourself in a situation where you seem to be chasing something and constantly feeding your mind, that it’s the office politics, the irrational boss, the unrealistic client or any other that’s holding you back and your professional growth.

Stop, pause, take 3 deep breaths and answer this question before you do anything else.

Recall which aspect of your present job is bothering you the most? and then ask yourself

What do you want in this situation? What are your goals?

Sit down with your answers and read them to yourself, this very act will be powerful enough to pull you out of the confusion that has enveloped you today, and after this for the next steps, feel free to connect here.
