How to recognize who has power in office politics.

Mona is an extremely efficient emerging woman leader, but present day today she is frustrated to the hilt as this is the second consecutive year she has been overlooked for promotion, leaving her dejected and demotivated.

As a reaction to her appraisal feedback, she applied for a week’s leave with no plan or agenda, as if she was trying to settle a score with her absence amidst a busy project delivery time period.

Mona’s supervisor is a short-tempered lady who have a lot of experience in the field but lacks both skill and kindness, working for a mediocre boss has landed Mona in a tricky situation, leaving her overwhelmed and confused, off late she finds she spends half of her day trying to figure out ways to deal with her boss than the work deliverables.

A week ago, in a key stakeholder meet, Mona and her faulty approach adapted in her communication and behavior landed her into a danger zone.

A quiet Mona spoke and spoke all the wrong things at the wrong time and in a very wrong way.

{When we suppressed our emotions for too long, it bursts in the most dangerous of ways and often in the most wrong place.}

The outcome of it resulted in being passed on for promotion. The recency effect took charge.

Recency effect: a tendency to remember the most recently presented information.

In our work together, based on her narrative I coached Mona on

-A technique to read Power distribution at office

-A list of lessons learned from the insights she gathered through the above technique

-The inward journey of Self.

Recognizing the power relationships in any group – is crucial when you find yourself and your career stagnating despite your best performance.

In Mona’s case learning about power relations between her Boss and the key stakeholder, brought in a completely new perspective to her, based on which she was able to find her way out of the confusion with clarity and direction and also build on her PI political intelligence.
