Power Naps & Healing

Let’s close this month with the most powerful ways to attain Closure and Clarity

& This comes from something we all have access to, especially in the present remote work setup, which makes it all the more possible.

All it asks of thee is to set aside some time and practice it through a direct indulgence.

To explain this in more detail, I’d like to share a story as a first-hand practitioner of it.

The Story ;

Once upon a time, when I started my journey as an entrepreneur, the initial years were the most difficult, especially with my business coach, who was a hard task master. While I worked fewer hours compared to my regular 9-to-5 job, as a Coach, speaking with countless people on endless discovery calls was the most exhausting of all, both mentally and physically.

I was and I am very fortunate to have a good stream of clients; however, one area that kept me awake at night and working for hours, racking my brain, requiring in-depth research was exploring my niche (market research on my target customer).

In doing so, I devoted every waking hour to making copious notes and dreaming about arriving at the absolute description of my Ideal client.

Amidst the chaos I created, the solution seems far-fetched, and then one day.

Eureka!

The solution came from an unexpected source.

My “Me time”  a ten-minute break, a time to be with myself, unwind and relax.

During a long, tired day in Summer.

My best practice is taking a 10-minute power nap on my office floor; I prefer hard surfaces. I am accompanied by my humming air cooler, with water trickling at its Khus-made walls, a drop here and there, and a few occasional drops on me, the ceiling fan trying hard to compete and throwing in a mix of warm and cool air with a tinge of Khus fragrance in the room.

In a matter of seconds, I drift off to my dreamy world.

I am in my most comfortable space, filled with a deep sense of gratitude and contentment; this brief ten-minute break from the world is an achievement in itself, reminding me about some of the best decisions I have taken when I decided to quit both my corporate job and a mindless chase for I do not know what!

I give myself complete permission to “just be” and absorb these priceless moments.

Sometimes, I wake up, watching the sun journeying west to rise on the other side of the world. Late noon is my favourite time of the day. It reminds me of a typical day in the life of any character in Malgudi Days, an imaginary location I closely relate to and travel along with R.K. Narayan.

And then, on some days when sleep refuses to come, I lie awake, playing with the leaves outside the window swaying in the sunshine.

Even though I do not believe in rebirths, my best guess is that I would have been a farmer in my previous birth or perhaps an orchard farmer who prefers an early start, moderate sunshine, and then enjoys an afternoon nap to refresh and rejuvenate.

I think, along with the heavy ancestral trauma that I hold (healing in progress), I also have traces inside me of a farming community. While I could not gather any information related to the present family setup, and with my father no longer alive to shed more light on this, I let my assumption be my truth.

Savoring technique

The experience I’ve shared with you here is called the “Savoring technique”, picking up the best moments from your everyday life, living it mindfully and reminiscing about the experience, it offers a great healing for the nervous system of its toxins and trauma.

As a regular practitioner of it, I found it to be a crucial component in building my resiliency and fostering mental health and well-being.

So,

Next time when

  • Nothing in life seems to make sense
  • Your problems seem to hold no solution
  • You don’t know what to do, where to start or what’s next

Let go of everything, take a few deep breaths, and give yourself the permission to REST either through a power nap or simply “JUST BE” in your me time.

Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you.” — Anne Lamott.

Warmly,

Mehnaz Amjad.
