Deepa is an IT senior developer in a multinational corporation and was returning to coaching after a gap of two years.
I asked her to calm down a bit because I could sense a bit of haste in her rapid breathing and rushed manner.
I began by asking her to take 3 deep breaths and then inquired whether she was carrying a notepad and a pen, since she is well-versed in my coaching style.
She was ready, and then I gave her 2 questions to think about and answer.
Q1 – What is that thought or memory that keeps cropping up in your mind every time you find yourself alone with your thoughts? In short, what’s on the top of your mind, not the immediate but the recurring.
Q2– What is that one thing you are delaying with every possible reason you can find to avoid any action on it?
I gave her a good thirty minutes to think and write her responses as detailed as possible.
In between, I also asked if her Vitamin D levels and quality of sleep have been in the past several months, to which she replied both were within the desired range.
Emotional exhaustion stems from emotions that are masked and often ignored; the two questions above brought to the surface Deepa’s deeply buried emotions, which had been exhausted because she had not given them their due!
Deepa now understood the deep lethargy she often felt at different points in her life, but she still had a lot to cover because the exhaustion she had created was not a matter of a few weeks.
Our work for the next 4 months was all about that: weekly sessions of reflections and deep dives, followed by a review of the responses surfaced through writing, which often entailed discovery of pivotal moments left unnoticed and trigger points in the form of a particular relation or person and behaviours repeated without her even being aware of it.
Towards the end, Deepa not only had an answer to the question we started our work with, but she was also aware of how the hidden, exhausted emotions were playing a key role both at her workplace, where she was passed over for a promotion and then back home with her loved ones, especially her spouse, who was also her childhood friend and now a stranger.
She finally made that decision, gave a dignified end to a three-decade-old relationship, and did not regret it.
Is there a decision you’ve been delaying on a record basis that is silently emotionally exhausting you? Be aware, I’m just a click away; book your call here
Warmly,
Mehnaz Amjad.
